Do you qualify for the £7,500 heat pump grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is more accessible in 2026 than it used to be — one of the old requirements was scrapped in April. There are now three main tests, and your property needs to pass all three.
1. Location
You must be in England or Wales. Scotland has a separate scheme (the Home Energy Scotland Grant), and Northern Ireland isn't currently covered.
2. Property type
Domestic properties only — owner-occupied homes, private landlords, and small non-domestic premises. Most house types qualify: detached, semi-detached, terraced, bungalows, even some flats where you own the heating system outright. New-build properties are generally excluded.
3. The heating you're replacing
The grant is for replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric storage heating with a heat pump. If you already have a heat pump and want to upgrade, you don't qualify. If you've never had central heating — for example a rural off-grid home — you do: the grant covers first-time installations.
